Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Wednesday, I was able to enter school for the first time in 9 weeks to meet the owner of the Detea building company. It was amazing to see the development of the building as they move towards the completion of the structural walls by the end of May.

There were a few questions raised from our communication over the weekend regarding school openings. To be clear, we have to be guided by government guidelines. However, the aim is to open for all students who are able to attend, (those in the country) in September. This is providing there is no spike in infections, that government advice allows us to open and that there are no travel restrictions between Malaga and Cadiz provinces. If any student is not able to attend due to travel restrictions, there will be online schooling available, so we can all continue with our education. More details of this will follow as the government makes firmer decisions and the autonomous communities also share their guidance and direction.

Please rest assured, we are already planning for different scenarios to ensure that the quality of the Sotogrande education remains as high as ever.

This week we had our first communication from the IBO regarding the marking of the Diploma candidates’ Internal Assessments. In the communication, the IBO alluded to the fact that data from the last 5 years would be used to help triangulate grades, along with moderation of the Internal Assessments themselves and the predicted grades provided by staff. This is great news for the D2 students, as our data over the last 5 years has been strong. As we receive further updates regarding this process and indeed the final cost of the marking of the Internal Assessments, we will be in touch with D2 parents. Your patience and support continues to be valued and deeply appreciated.

In Primary this week, P6 students have been working hard on their group action component and have been finishing off changes to their individual inquiries for their PYP Exhibition which takes place next Tuesday and Wednesday. P5 started their new unit and have been looking at Biomes of the world. The students have been busy investigating food chains, food webs and photosynthesis as well as inquiring into different elements of an ecosystem. On Friday in Spanish, our P2 students had the pleasure of working with the famous writer from the north of Spain, Paco Abril. P1 have had an exciting two weeks. Despite or perhaps because of the lock down, P1 have set off on a virtual ‘around the world journey’. Their travels have taken them to research major landmarks in countries that they may one day wish to visit in reality. Over the past two weeks, our youngest students in EC1 have made their own binoculars which they used on a virtual safari trip created by their teachers. Much fun was had by all.

As a community, we are eternally grateful to all of our medical support team over these last few weeks; the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers and pharmacists, who have helped keep us all safe and treat our loved ones. This weekend will see our first weekend opportunity to gather in groups of 10 or fewer. Please be reminded that social distancing is critical and touch, kisses and hugs between friends who have not seen each other for 9 weeks is not advised. Please do talk to you children about this. Together, if we are strong we will overcome this virus and together we must currently remain cautious.

I wish you a wonderful weekend, and remind you that the next week is a short week, we finish on Wednesday, due to San Roque day and the Puente.

Best wishes

Jak Kearney
