Dear parents and guardians,

This week we have been hit by SOTO ROX fever! Students spent last weekend at school rehearsing, as well as every spare second throughout the week, and boy did it paid off – last night they totally blew me away! The quality and energy of the performances, the stage and equipment and the enormous amount of preparation put in by everyone involved was clear to see. Huge thanks to sister Inspired school, Fulham, who brought a band and performed last night, joining in with the SotoRox fever! Our Education Director, Nick Wergan, flew in to attend and, like many of us, was left amazed by the extraordinary talent and confidence of our students.

I want to congratulate the 160 musicians on their outstanding performances and thank those who contributed to the event by helping. This was very much a student-led event, so well done to the D1 students who took the lead on this, to the KP team for their support and of course to the Peri team, Mr Luis and Mr Wix. Without their help, vision, and drive an event like SotoRox would remain a distant student dream. Tonight, we will be trialling the SotoSmash event! This is the first event of its kind showcasing student and staff DJs.

I would also like to congratulate D2 student, Leonie, on been offered a fantastic scholarship to attend Toronto University. The Lester B. Pearson scholarship is awarded to a  student who demonstrates exceptional academic achievement and creativity and who is recognized as a leader within their school. The scholarship awarded to Leonie is worth 92,500 Canadian $ plus 7500$ as a Toronto scholar. This is an outstanding achievement and is a testament to her drive and dedication.

This week we saw our students engage in a great variety of sporting events. On Wednesday we hosted an U9 football tournament, with students coming from schools past Malaga to take part in the games. Our U9 girls team finished in 3rd place, and all of our students played with enthusiasm and commitment. I would like to thank Lola Villa and Barme Rondan for arranging this excellent opportunity for our U9 students. On Tuesday our U19 basketball teams took part in a tournament at Aloha. Both teams played incredibly well, the girls finished in 1st place and the boys team a very close 2nd. Congratulations to all students who stepped up to represent SIS this week.

Next week, on Thursday 20th, the PTA will hold an open meeting in the cantina at 9am and an additional session (a repeat) at 7pm at Benesse, for those of you who can’t attend at 9am. The focus of the meetings is fundraising, community events and ideas on how to spend the raised funds.

Additionally, Friday 21st is the last day of term, and we will be hosting our monthly Travel to School in a Green Way Day along with our Send a Child to School Day.

As mentioned in the mailshot on Monday, please join me in welcoming Jon Hodgeson to the Advisory Panel. You can contact Jon by email on jhodgeson@sis.gl.

Next week, I will be inspecting a school for the Council of International Schools. The Council have recently brought out a new series of standards, and I will be working as part of a team assessing and accrediting a school in Austria. This will provide excellent preparation and experience for us, as we will be going through our own inspection in 2022.

While I am away, Mr Kevin Stone, Head of Secondary, and Mrs Emma Butler, Head of Primary, will be available should you have any questions.

Please do keep in mind the advice regarding Coronavirus (read the last mailshot here) and rest assured if we need to send any updates, these will be sent through as mailshots.

Warm wishes

Jak Kearney
