Dear parents and guardians,

I want to thank you for your help, support and trust this week. With the return to school from half term break, there were protocol shifts, changes to schedules and all this happened smoothly, thanks to our community spirit.  As the situation evolves, so must our procedures, and I would kindly request all families adopt an addition to our existing policy.

Should your child be off school, or sent home from school, with a temperature and cold/flu symptoms, they must remain at home until fully recovered. Before returning to school, you must obtain a doctors letter confirming they are fit and healthy.

Thank you for your support and willingness to adapt at such short notice. This is one of the reasons SIS is truly a special place.

Over the break we have had numerous reasons for celebration, the first being the safe return of 55 students who went on the SIS ski trip to Sierra Nevada. A special thanks goes to Mr Wix, Miss Wiltshire and Mr Duran who accompanied the students along with our friends from Adventure Bug. With the exception of a hospital visit, the result of a fall on the very last run of the final day (!) It really was a wonderfully successful trip.

Our D2 students have been receiving responses from the various universities they have applied to, with some excellent offers. These include scholarship offers, a place at St. Andrews, Scotland, to study medicine and many more exciting opportunities. To read the full report written by Jason Mungles, Head of University and Career Guidance, click here.

For students in M5 and D1, Inspired partners, Crimson Education, will be offering a course supporting students who wish to take the SAT to gain access to universities in the USA. This is in addition to the provision we offer through the Khan Academy and the after school SAT preparation classes. For more information on the SAT offer, please click here.

With the M3 community project coming to a close, one group has been in touch to share their product. Miki and Rowan’s community project goal was to reduce the consumption of meat. They believe that this goal is important because livestock production is one of the leading contributors to climate change. By trying to reduce their own consumption, as well as the school’s, they would make a difference to the carbon footprint. The recipes were tested with friends and families and led to the creation of a cookbook of favourites to share with our community. If you would like to download the book, please click here.

On Monday, we held a professional development day for staff. The purpose of the day was to consider what actions we would need to take if we were forced to close the school (due to coronavirus, or another pandemic). This is not something that any of us want to consider, however it is essential to consider and proactively plan for. With sister schools in Italy, Vietnam and Jakarta temporarily closing, we want to ensure that the learning of your children here at SIS would not be interrupted. If we have to close, further details would emerge. As part of the plan we have created this important list of items that you could make sure you have at home to aid a virtual learning experience.

Before Christmas, we announced a new and exciting partnership, Inspired by Berklee. I am delighted to be able to share with you the news that Sotogrande International School has been selected as one of only 10 Inspired schools around the world to pilot this programme. Over the coming months, as the programme is introduced, we will host an ‘Artist in Residence’ giving our students unrivalled access to workshops and lessons led by Berklee Alumni. In addition, Inspired Global Camps, are proud to add a Berklee Camp to their already outstanding premium summer camps. Nadim M Nsouli, Inspired Founder, Chairman & CEO explains more in this link.

Best wishes,

Jak Kearney
