Whole School News From the Head of Teaching and Learning Dear Parents and Guardians, We have experienced another very busy but exciting week at SIS. Our M4 – D1 exams came to a close on Wednesday. I would like to congratulate the students on their hard work and commitment to the last few assessments and the staff, who have worked incredibly hard to organize, write and now mark all of the exams. Reports will be live on June 26th, following our end of year assembly, where the yearbook will be officially released! On Thursday 11th the P1 students took part in their incredible journey. In one day they managed to travel on a bus, a train and a boat! Their journey helped them develop their planning and organisation skills and enhanced their skills in coordinating and timekeeping. The P4 students left for their first overnight school trip to Finca Alcaidesa. They walked to the finca and stopped for lunch. There they took part in climbing, swimming and archery. Today they arrived back happy, but rather tired! On my walk around this week, I managed to drop into several maths lessons. I had a really interesting discussion about combined outcomes with P3 and set them a task looking at the number of outcomes from flipping 3 coins. In P5 I had a lovely discussion with Carol Hartland’s maths group about integers, square and cube numbers. I set them challenges to find out the symbol used for integers and gave them some problems to solve involving numbers to different powers. I am looking forward to returning to discuss their findings. Often I speak about just how wonderful our staff are. I truly believe that we have an amazing group of teachers who go above and beyond their job descriptions to make the learning experiences for our children special and unique. This week I came across the Global Teacher award. I would appreciate it if you would take 5 minutes to nominate a teacher whom your child admires or values or whom you feel has made a real difference to the learning experience of your child. Please click here http://www.globalteacherprize.org if you wish to make a nomination. Once you have nominated a teacher, please then send them an email to let them know. The next few weeks are extremely busy, but we would like to remind you that all school days are important and your child’s attendance at school is crucial. I wish you a wonderful weekend. Jak Kearney Activities Programme 2015/2016 As part of our commitment to promoting students discovering their individual passion and creating flexible pathways to learning – we are expanding our Activities Programme for both After School on the main SIS Campus and for our Boarders at the San Roque Campus. In early September we will start our new activities programme and are therefore asking now for those interested parents, other members of the community, Clubs and professionals in Sport and other accredited hobbies or activities to join us and be part of our programme. If you have a skill, interest or hobby or know someone who does – please get in touch and tell us more about what you can offer. You just need to fill in the application form that you will receive automatically after sending an email to activities@sis.gl. We will then gather the information and work with you to develop this further. From Primary to Secondary The M1 teachers are pleased to invite all parents of current P6 students to an introductory meeting in room T1 of the Timber Building on 16th June from 9am to 10am. The M1 core team will give a brief presentation on what to expect and how to help your children prepare for the transition from PYP to MYP. We look forward to meeting you on Tuesday. M1 team First Sotogrande International Polo Tournament We are pleased to invite all parents to a family day on Sunday 14th of June from 10:00 am. Primary School News Important safety reminder We wish to remind parents that all primary age children on campus after 3.40pm must be supervised. If you are enjoying a social chat in the cantina after school, perhaps while waiting for an older student or an extra-curricular activity, any other children waiting with you must be supervised. Another Exciting Experiential Learning Experience for P1 P1 returned to Eco Spirit to harvest their vegetables a couple of months after their first visit. This trip also included the opportunity to plan and carry out a camping experience. Both activities have involved a significant amount of planning and organizing, skills these six year olds have developed with pleasure. P3 Spanish class cheese tasting Last Thursday we went to the cantina to try and to learn about different types of cheese. The students worked with informative texts describing the traditional methods of cheese-making. Sodexo staff kindly cooperated by allowing the children to taste a wide range of cheese. The professional cantina staff very kindly provided a lovely fruit salad for our lactose intolerant students. P4 at Gibraltar Airport P4 students had the opportunity to visit the bus station in La Linea and the Gibraltar airport in connection with the new unit “Transport”. We had the opportunity to experience, watch and discover the world of airports, air transport and aviation. In addition to a great day practising Spanish. Oliver T-Shirts arrived this week Rehearsals are now getting fully underway! Call to all P6 Parents & Guardians The M1 teachers would like to invite you to an MYP1 induction meeting on the 16th June from 9am to 10am In T1 of the Timber building. This event will take place between the pool and the cantina, and will be signposted from the main gate. M1 Team ‘The Love of the Nightingale’ The D1 Theatre group will be performing ‘The Love of the Nightingale’ by Timberlake Wertenbaker on the 17th of June at 6.30pm.
