Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope you had a lovely break and a chance to begin your Christmas planning. With Paul’s retirement and with the desire to better support the learning of our students there will be some movements within existing classes, with Daniel Maloney joining SIS to teach Art, English and Drama and additional classes being created in M3 Maths. Teachers have spoken directly to students to inform them of possible changes. Congratulations to M5 student Carlota Sanchez who came second (after an extra hole play-off) in the Junior European Golf Championships last week. Over this term it has been a great pleasure to talk to all the teachers and observe some amazing work that has been going on in all the year groups. There were lots of smiling faces as the following students were congratulated for their effort and attitudes. Homeroom classes: Music PE ELD Spanish Visitors from our Ludoteca, Fundamentals Christmas in Primary First Is Coming……Not long now! Performance dates and times as follows: Congratulations to all P3 students On Thursday P3 students and the Primary Spanish Team spent the morning at our Fundamentals Nursery, where our students performed a fantastic play for the nursery children. It was great to see our P3 students communicating and performing so confidently in Spanish. The Christmas Elves Visit EC1-P3 Today EC1-P3 had a lovely surprise as they were visited by some Christmas Elves. Much fun was had by all! Thanks to Sotogrande S.A. for this Christmas moment!! As we slowly prepare for the festive season and as part of showing the Christmas spirit, KP and the Student Council would like to call upon your generosity to support our friends from Hogar Betania in La Linea. As well as running numerous specific projects, Hogar Betania is currently supporting over 250 families in our local area. One of the smaller but definitely heart warming initiatives they organise is the Christmas present campaign, which aims to help these families to provide Christmas presents, joy and magic for the younger ones in the family. Our objective is therefore simple. We are arranging for each class to fill boxes for certain age groups: P3 Newborn to 12 months A few suggestions of what we will include are small clothing items, personal hygiene products, story or colouring books, arts and crafts resources, small toys. Please do not include second hand goods, war toys, money, sharp objects or perishable goods. Boxes will be made in class (more shoe boxes and wrapping paper please!) and then distributed by Student Council and The Kindred Project and delivered to Hogar Betania ready for Christmas! Thank you for your support. University Convention Last Thursday, Sotogrande was visited by nearly 40 universities as part of our University & Career Programme. We also hosted 8 other international schools from along the coast, who came to participate in the event. Over the course of the day there were numerous opportunities for our students to question the universities, and in the afternoon we ran 4 application seminars for our Diploma students to attend. Many parents were also able to visit the event in the afternoon, and the universities can be quoted as saying, “that we all agreed that today was the best [university convention]” that they had attended this year! There was positive feedback from the students, with excellent support from Diploma students in many different roles. One parent of an M5 student summed up the importance of the convention from their perspective with these words, “It is really helpful that you start this process [university choices] early, as they need time to consider their options and focus their minds prior to selecting their Diploma subjects. It is great that they have time to reflect and that it isn’t a rushed decision. The University Convention helps bring this decision making to life and gives us all an opportunity to understand what the universities are looking for in their applicants. I am sure this familiarity with the requirements and processes gives the students an advantage when applying.” It was also a positive step in raising our profile with universities globally. It is unquestionably true that if university admissions staff are aware of SIS, and the calibre of our students, then it will add to our students’ application profiles. Mitchell Stevens, a renowned Harvard Professor wrote that, “high school guidance counsellors in particular are crucial brokers of applicants at selective colleges because they have enduring and reciprocal beneficial relationships with admission officers.” and it is these events that develop that link, not only with the counsellor but also with the student. Chris Turner from Winchester University Admissions concluded the day by saying, “the fair was brilliant! We have been touring Spain visiting about 12 international schools in five days and the fair at Sotogrande was by far the best”. Inter-school Creative Writing contest On Friday 4 December, selected senior school students took part in the fourth inter-school creative writing contest at Aloha College. They were warmly welcomed by the host school and enjoyed meeting their rivals from Aloha and Swans. They wrote on story titles chosen by the English and Spanish teachers at the three schools, which were selected at random. Aloha provided us with lunch after the contest and our entrants then sped back to school with what seemed to be pleasant memories of the day. They will however have to wait until January to find out how they have fared. San Roque Boarding House News Boarding House News |
