Dear Parents and guardians, We have experienced another wonderful week at SIS. Last weekend students from M1 to D1 attended the annual trip to El Cañelo for music and song writing. Supported by staff, the students under Mr. Wickersham’s guidance worked together to create some wonderful new masterpieces in the hills between Malaga and Granada. On my walk around last week I spent some lovely time with EC1. We did some writing, colouring, printing and played with some play dough. It was really exciting to sit with them, to hear their stories and build towers with them. The new improved play space for EC1 and EC2 enables students to move around more freely, exploring different areas of play. I also spent time with P3, where they were learning about portioning large numbers in Maths. I spent time working with students to understand place value in a fun and creative way. We finished the lesson with a round of ‘chicken eggs’, a lovely online game helping students to order numbers, thus recapping their understanding from the lesson. On Thursday we celebrated Poetry with the Sotogrande International School Poetry Day. Students from across the school spent the day learning about different poets, creating new poems and reciting poetry to different year groups of students. I would like to thank everyone involved in making this event a great success, most notably Lisa Stone for taking the initiative to create the event. Today Friday we witnessed the return of the SIS Triathlon. I would like to congratulate Ali Gibson for another great event, which allowed students across our school to test their levels of endurance in this rather grueling event. I also wish to remind you that Wednesday 12th October is a National holiday in Spain and the school will be closed. I wish you a wonderful weekend. Primary Spanish Club (Master Chef session) The first meeting of the Primary Spanish Club (Club de Español de Primaria) took place last Friday. At 5.30pm a kitchen professional, with an assistant, taught them how to prepare a delicious pizza, each child adding their own favourite ingredients. Then while the pizzas were in the oven, the students were able to prepare a desert and enjoy a small snack. This experience was so much fun that we have a waiting list for the end of October, when it will be repeated, but this time with the P4 and P5 groups. Readathon is fully underway! Over the past week it has been a great pleasure to watch the children enjoy reading and collect their stickers as they complete the reading ‘smiley faces’. Visiting Speakers Over the past week P6 have had the pleasure of having two visiting speakers who came to share their personal experiences of significant political events. This is part of their unit inquiring into ‘Changes over the last 60 years have affected our families.’ P6 are beginning to explore the aspect of social and political change. On Monday Mr. Ali Gibson came and spoke about life in Belfast, Northern Ireland and the peace process that happened there. On Tuesday Mr. Maurice Gache, who taught at our school over 25 years ago, came and spoke about the reopening of the frontier between Gibraltar and Spain. P4 Unit based Trip P4 spent a lovely morning at the Stoa Art Gallery in Estepona in connection with their unit of inquiry on Symbolism. The children had the opportunity to meet the artist, Conchi Álvarez sketch the paintings, look around the studio and visit the four storey mural that the artist had recently completed in Estepona. El Cañuelo Music Trip 2016 Twenty-four of our fabulous music students ranging from M1 all the way to D2 were whisked away last weekend on the journey of a lifetime. In the astonishing mountains of El Cañuelo, Velez, Malaga our students had the opportunity to take a trip away from all distractions, disconnect and just be surrounded by inspiration for 3 days. Throughout these 3 days they partook in several workshops including Rhythm & Groove, Riffology, Structure & Arrangement, Using fiction, Beating writers block, and 4 zones. They then wrote and performed original songs in an evening concert under the stars. Although independent, our students were not limited to their own knowledge of song writing, as our dedicated team of musicians and highly trained and professional music staff were eager to help out their students on this special journey. Spanish Language Acquisition – Consulting the doctor As part of a unit on Health, the students in the M4 second language class have recorded video dialogues Community PTA IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT In light of the school preparing for the CIS inspection, this is allowing everyone to stop and take time to review their purpose and mission. The School Board is currently reviewing its constitution and we feel it is essential that the PTA does the same. With this in mind the PTA AGM has been postponed to allow us to be clear about our purpose moving forward. Also, in the excitement of the Back to School Party, we forgot to draw the raffle!
