Dear Parents and Guardians

This week has been a tremendously busy, but exciting way to finish the year with primary swim galas, end of year celebrations for EC1 – P2, the P5 & P6 show “Alice in Wonderland” (which was terrific!), end of year inter disciplinary unit showcases, exams and tonight, the M5 graduation!

The energy and dedication of our staff, especially at the end of year is tremendous. We also hosted the Inspired Board this week for the last Board meeting of the year. They were once again very impressed by the standard of our offerings, the diversity of the programmes and the passion of our staff.

We were contacted this week by El Corte Ingles, who informed us that the school uniform is now on sale in their Algeciras and Puerto Banus stores. Please ensure you read the uniform guide carefully before spending any money; and in particular please be aware of the following:

  1. Trousers – Chinos are allowed, but NOT jeans or tracksuit bottoms.
  2. Black only shoes / trainers – no mix of colours, no boots (including Doc Martins)
  3. A dark blue or black coat may be worn if it is cold, but a blue v-neck school jumper for MYP must also be worn at the same time. Please note hoodies and tracksuit tops are NOT school uniform.

Essentially, if you go to El Corte ingles and you see items in the uniform section, this is uniform. If you have to search elsewhere, please ask the question, is this acceptable?

We are always looking for ways to enhance and improve our provision and would welcome feedback through our parent survey; please take 5 minutes to complete this very quick form.

On behalf of all the staff at Sotogrande International School, I would like to extend huge public thanks to the PTA for organising the staff appreciation event.  At Pauls’ memorial earlier this year,  I spoke about gratitude. This event was a shining example of gratitude.  We are all very passionate about what we do on a daily basis, and seeing others stop, reflect and thank us for our energy is overwhelming appreciated and valued. Thank you!!

Finally, we are delighted to invite you to join us at the end of year celebration assembly on Tuesday at 10am. The 2019 yearbooks will be released following this assembly.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes

Jak Kearney

Primary sports

Over the last week our primary students have taken part in an indoor athletics festival at Aloha College, Marbella. The students in P5 and P6 students had a fantastic time learning new skills.

Congratulations to all students who took part in the primary swim gala, thank you to parents for your support and to Miss Lola and the PHE team for running a fantastic fun event.

Estrecho Rugby Club

Sotogrande International School has a great relationship with the Estrecho Rugby Club in Pueblo Nuevo. Around 35 students from P1 to M5 represent the various teams. SIS has loaned Estrecho an array of rugby equipment which Mr Summers hopes will see many of our students benefit from the quality coaching at the club. Many of the age groups won the Andalusian Championship and the Sub 10 team went one further by being crowned the best team in all of Spain in their category. Some of the students who have benefited from playing rugby at Estrecho are pictured handing over the equipment to Adrian Parsons, the Sub 16 coach. Next year we hope to form even stronger relationships.

San Enrique Football Club offers great opportunities for our primary boys and girls to play football outside of school in a friendly environment. The latest addition is a ladies team in which Miss Steph plays alongside several of our talented girl footballers. The ladies team trains every Tuesday from 8pm.

International Schools Athletic Association

Sotogrande have entered the ISAA conference for the 2019/20 academic year. Schools in the conference are from UK, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Switzerland and the Netherlands. This competition is made up from a range of tournaments in a variety of sports. During the inaugural year SIS have registered an interest in attending these events

  • Term One – Boys/Girls 11-a-side Football, TASIS, UK
  • Term Two  – Swimming, British School of Netherlands, Holland
  • Term Three – Tennis, British School of Netherlands, Holland – Golf, TASIS, UK

I would like to finish my final newsletter write up by thanking all the students, parents, teachers who have supported the competitive sports at SIS. Next year we welcome Mrs Samantha Weaver as our Head of Swimming and I look forward to hearing about the progress. Have a safe summer and good luck to all SIS sports teams next year.

This past weekend, our M3 students Teresa A. and Stella B. participated in the final selection for the Andalucian 7s U16 team. Teresa A. will be on the Andalucia team this coming weekend in the Spanish Championships held in Valladolid. Good luck Teresa!

PTA News

Well, the year flew by rather quickly! We have spent hours planning events, staging events, distributing the proceeds and talking about what we could try next. You have
supported us, attended the events and week after week, read pleas for help, more help and ticket buying.

Without the Marketing team guiding us and making the events come to life we would not have achieved anything that looked attractive, engaging or professional. Your
unwavering patience and smiles have been quite amazing. A huge thank you to Juan, Lidia, Sophie and Amalia. You really deserve a holiday from us!
The year cannot end without mentioning Anne: teacher, librarian, oracle of most things, keeper of treasured photos and to us, a woman with calm, cast-iron diligence.
Thank you for your support, we shall miss you very, very much.

Fundamentals Musical Festival!

We celebrated the end of this school year with our first ever music concert. Magical moments for parents and teachers alike as they watched the children sing, dance and enjoy the music. Thank you to all the Fundamentals team, especially Cristina for making this special event possible.

Message From Miss Emma Butler

What a busy and brilliant final week of this academic year!

We have seen all our EC1, EC2, P1 and P2 students and parents enjoy their end of year celebrations.

P1-P6 students participated in their annual swimming galas.

Our P3 students held a bake sale for the action component of their final unit.

P4 went on an overnight trip.

And on Wednesday night our P5 and P6 entertained us with an expressive arts extravaganza of ‘Alice In Wonderland.’

On Monday we have our P6 Graduation and Primary Prize Giving. I hope you will be able to join us.

As we head into our last few days I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students and their families a wonderful summer

Secondary Year Group Parent Representatives

We would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Sara Hagglof, Michaela Buch (M1), Justyna Dabrowska (M2), Sophie Tilley (M3), Justyna Dabrowska (M4), Maddy Maclachlan (M5) Sarah Burgess (D1), Araceli Gavira (D1) and Mia Cederberg-Skvorc D2).

All your help, your contributions and communications throughout this year have been greatly appreciated. Thank you!

M1 Interdisciplinary unit: Arts/LOMCE and Individuals & Societies

The M1 students presented their IDU Arts, LOMCE and I&S showcase on Wednesday 19th of June. Parents and students were immersed in an Arts installation that was a complete sensory experience. On huge hanging panels of impressionistic trees soft lighting pulsed to the beat of meditation music created from sound bytes taken from the trip to Piñar del Rey, Drama students embedded symbolic movement work representing cycles in nature within filmed montages shot at Piñar del Rey projected onto 3 suspended sheets. As the audience walked over a floor crunching with the leaves from pine trees they were asked to jot down their own sensory responses to this abstract recreation of the connections made between humankind and nature. Following the showcase parents were invited to a overview of curriculum objectives and a session on forest bathing to help gain a better insight into this challenging and innovative approach to learning.

Congratulations to our Diploma students on their official IELTS results!

We are extremely proud of the D1 and D2 students who sat the external IELTS exams at SIS on the 1st June. The final grades are outstanding, and will allow students to gain access to the universities and courses of their choice.

We would like to commend the following students in particular:

  • Ricardo, Aniss, Marta, Anastasia, Sebastien, Felipe and Thomas for achieving a band 7.5 or above. (This is the highest grade demanded by the most prestigious universities.)
  • Vicente for his impressive improvement over the past year.

We are a learning community, passionate about providing an International Education, which inspires and encourages learning and intercultural understanding. We facilitate self-discovery and the development of unique interests, gifts and talents, whilst promoting service learning as a force for good in the world.
