Dear Parents and guardians,
I hope you have enjoyed the long weekend and managed to spend some quality time as families in the glorious weather. As the final two weeks of the term draw in, I would like to remind you that school shuts at 12pm on Friday 21st December. (School buses will depart at 12.30pm) Please ensure that you collect your children promptly.
I am delighted to share the annual report for last academic year (2017-2018) with you, our valued community. The annual report is now in its 3rd year and provides some key data for your reference. The report tells the story of our admissions growth, academic results, university successes, class sizes, arts, sports and overseas trips, as well as sharing feedback from our annual parent review and our recent CIS, NEASC and IBO visit. (LINK)
I hope you enjoy reading the document. I would like to give sincere thanks to everyone in our community who contributed to its creation and translation.
Today we held a non-uniform day in exchange for a donated gift for the PTA tombola. Thank you to everyone who supported the PTA today. We hope you will join us at the Christmas Market tomorrow afternoon at Soto Blue in the marina. There will be a wonderful array of stalls and entertainment, not to mention an opportunity for children to visit Santa’s Grotto and of course our Grand Christmas Raffle – don’t forget your tickets!
Finally I would like to remind you that on Monday 17th December from 7.30pm we are lucky enough to be hosting a concert from B-Vocal at the Odean Multicines in the Bay Plaza Shopping Mall in Palmones. The event is sponsored by Land Rover and tickets are available from Henry in reception.
Best wishes for a wonderful weekend.
This week was full of preparations for the primary Christmas performances, which will be happening on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Thank you to all the staff who are working hard to prepare these wonderful festive shows. In addition on Thursday evening we witnessed several performances from D1 and D2 theatre students. These devised performances make up part of their internal assessment pieces for the IB Diploma exams. In addition they will be entered for LAMDA assessments later this year. Thank you to everyone who came to support the students.
I would like to remind you about the traffic flow in the morning. The right hand lane is for drop off only. Please do not drop off students on the roundabout, or in the lower car park. This behaviour is slowing the traffic down and causing students to be exiting cars in dangerous places. We politely request that you all stick with the rules to make the environment safer for everyone. Thanks in advance for your help and support.
Next Wednesday 19th December we are promoting another Walk to School day, please support this student initiative if you can.
BVocal music event
As members of the school community we have just been given the opportunity, sponsored by Land Rover, to experience an amazing concert. On Monday 17th December, BVocal, a world-renowned a cappella group, will be running a workshop for some of our secondary students. In the evening, BVocal will be performing a Christmas concert just for us at Odeon Multicines, in Palmones! The event will start at 7.30pm and end at 9pm. Tickets costing 5€ each are available from reception with all profits going to The Kindred Project.
Richard Hatcher, a robotics teacher from Atlanta, Georgia, will be here at SIS on Tuesday, December 18th to provide 10 to 15 interested students with a hands-on introduction to robotics. The workshop will be held between 3 and 5pm. Because the available places are limited, interested students should contact Mr. Reichert at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible to get on the list.

Last month’s ‘Walk to School’ event was a success, thank you to everyone that decided to participate. We will be having another Walk to School day next Wednesday 19th. Let’s make this one even more successful!

Feel free to wear any Christmas related outfits and make sure you bring your Santa hat!
If you are not familiar with the challenge, all participants are required to run a lap around the school premises before diving into the “ice” cold water of the swimming pool. After this, there will be a celebration by the poolside.
The challenge will start at 11.25am prompt on the pitch and will finish at 11.55am. Make sure you get changed beforehand during break time and don’t forget a towel and a change of clothes.

Message from Secondary Leadership Team – Review of Cycle Testing Procedures
We have conducted a review of Cycle Test Procedures incorporating feedback from students, teachers and parents and as a result we have made the following main changes:
No test for MYP last week of this term. D1 and D2 will still have a test. After Christmas M1 to M5 Cycle Tests will all be on a Thursday. A selection of MYP criteria will now be assessed. No M5 Mid-Year Exams. Reduced number of Cycle Tests across all years.
We hope that these changes will benefit the whole community.
Inter-school Creative Writing Competition
On Wednesday 12 students from M1 – D1 travelled to Aloha College to participate in a writing competition. Swans and EIC also were present. It was a very enjoyable environment and all of us had a great deal of fun. We were given an hour and a half to complete a story based on one of two titles to work with. We were writing under pseudonyms to provide a sense of anonymity for the judging. The titles for M1, M2 and M3 were, “Today is the day” and “Why did you come?” The M5 – D1 titles were “Impossible” and “The Runaway Train.” The titles we were given were challenging as there were so many different variations of a story that could be could be created. We wrote the stories on computers where we will be assessed in the coming weeks. Following the competition we were invited to have lunch with the students of Aloha. We all enjoyed the day immensely and look forward to the results in January!

Head of Sport
On Saturday 1st December we went on a trip to Puerto Banus; 27 boarders attended the trip and the weather was glorious. We had a great time on a Segway tour on the promenade, then spent some time getting a coffee and relaxing before heading back to boarding. We then had a Christmas themed evening after dinner where the boarders decorated the house whilst singing along to Christmas music.
Last week’s mini holiday saw various activities. On Thursday the boarders enjoyed a fantastic afternoon at Castellar Zoo, where they saw crocodiles, lions, monkeys and exotic birds, amongst others. They also got to hold a lemur, a desert fox and an Indian owl!
On Friday, they had the opportunity to shoot at each other during a mammoth paintballing session. It was hugely competitive and great, great fun!
Saturday was an exciting day where the boarders went to Malaga to experience the famous Christmas lights show. Though it was a late return, fun was had by all and helped the students get into the Christmas spirit before their Christmas Dinner and Show this week.
