TEDx Talks – 17:00 -20:00 in school theatre (See Whole School news)

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope the half term vacation was a great opportunity for you to rest, reconnect as families and for your children to recharge.  Whilst some of us managed this, Mr Wickersham, Mr Duran and Adventurebug took 50 students on the Sierra Nevada ski trip. I would like to publicly thank Adventurebug, Mr Wix and Mr Duran for giving their time so freely.  Additionally, I would like to congratulate the students who attended; Adventurebug reported that this was the best trip to date with the students being great ambassadors for SIS. More details about the ski trip in the Secondary News section below.

Before the half-term holiday, Mrs Stone and some students attended a creative writing competition at Laude San Pedro.  The results are now out and I would like to congratulate Olivia in M5 who was awarded a certificate for her short story, ‘A moment in time’. Hot off the press, we have just heard that Izzy in D1 has won first prize for the best secondary piece of artwork in the Sur in English art competition, beating all entries from schools along the coast. Congratulations Izzy, this is a wonderful achievement.

I would like to thank you all for your help and support regarding uniform. We have seen a marked improvement in the dress of students this week and look to maintain this smarter, more “uniform” look in the future.

I have just received details of the memorial service for Paul, which I am pleased to share with you now.

Celebrating the life of Paul Templeton

Date: Saturday 30th March 2019

Time. 2pm

Venue: Sotogrande Church

May I also remind you that there is a book at reception for personal message and memories, this will be given to Gendra after the service on 30th March.

Finally, a reminder that if you intend to depart this academic year, the deadline to send us notification is 4pm on 1st April; late notice of intention to leave will result in the loss of your initial deposit.  If you intend to stay, we value your continued custom.  Please note that the admissions team continues to be very busy and we will be moving to more waiting lists in the very near future. The 500€ down payments for next year’s fees will be officially requested following the Easter break; this is in part your guarantee that your children will have a place next year if a year group is full. Some parents have already made this early payment; thank you for that.  The invoice for next term was sent out yesterday, so a good opportunity to pay the 500€ would be to add it to the 3rd term fees.

I wish you a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes

Jak Kearney

Sports Report

The week before the holiday was very successful for our football teams,  dressed in their new kit kindly given to us by the PTA. Both our girls and boys A and B teams competed against schools from the Costa del Sol. Congratulations to our A teams who both won the competitions. The girls finished with a record of Played 5, Won 4, Drew 1; the boy’s team won all of their first 6 games before drawing 3-3 in their final game against our own B team! All the students were a credit to SIS and the PHE team. Next challenge for these students are the ISAA tournaments in London and Eindhoven in November.

Good luck to the U11 teams who will be competing next Wednesday, please feel free to come and support at La Menacha, Algeciras.

Winter Sports

Over half term Teiva H. took part at the Copa de España in Baquiera where he competed with 140 other snowboarders at the Spanish Championship. He managed to pass to the Quarterfinals and finished a respectable 18th. On his last day, Teiva was very fortunate to be coached by Regino Hernandez who is the Spanish Olympic Snowboard Champion.

This weekend is the Andalucian Slopestyle Championships in Sierra Nevada, and both Teiva and his younger brother Kai will be participating again!

Thank you to Après-school, a small company in Pueblo Nuevo, offering enriching after-school activities and experiences to our Fundamentals children. Our children enjoy visiting their fantastic workshop and sharing in their energy and creativity.

TEDx Talks at SIS

On Wednesday 20th March, a group of D1 students, Amy, Lucía, Izzy and María, will be holding our very own official TEDx Talk. The theme is ‘The Essence of a Changing World’ and there will be speeches discussing a variety of topics, ranging from sexual abuse to the impacts of single-use plastics on our planet. It will be held in the school theatre from 17:00 until 20:00. Tickets are €5 each and all proceeds go towards the wonderful Asni trip that the D1s will be embarking on later on in March. There will, of course, be a bar for drinks as well in the intervals. We hope that you can all come and join us to support the participants as well as the community in Asni!

We will also have a childcare service in the cantina where parents will be able to leave their children ages ranging from 3-13 years old during the show and they will be taken care of by D1 students and some members of staff! This will allow all parents to come to watch, the children will be playing games and will have some snacks there and during the intervals, the parents may come in and see them.

The Story of Kiss the CASbah

In 2008 a pioneering, driven, dedicated, dynamic group of diploma CAS students undertook a great leap of faith in volunteering themselves for a brand new concept. With both feet, hands, heads and hearts they jumped into ´Kiss the CASbah´.

An extraordinary enterprise, an ebullient energetic event, a musical and culinary extravaganza created to raise funds to donate to the Tiwizi association that selflessly serves the community of Asni.  Read more in our blog.

Royal visit to Asni, Morocco

Our most sincere congratulations to all our friends in Asni, Morocco, who received the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex 2 weeks ago. The purpose of their visit was to witness the incredible job carried out by NGOs and local educational institutions to guarantee access to education for girls. Amazing work done by NGO “Education for All”, whose founder Mike McHugo, has just been appointed MBE for improving gender equality; a real honour! May this be a wonderful recognition to everyone in Asni, who wholeheartedly give their all for the right to education. Looking forward to our next trip!

Message From Miss Emma Butler

I would like to start this half term by welcoming back all our families. I hope you had a wonderful and restful break. I would also like to welcome our new students who have started this week.

Before the break, our Primary Homeroom Teachers held our second parent, student, teacher target setting meetings for this academic year. Thank you to everyone who signed up and attended these meetings.

Primary students winter sports successes

Teiva H. had a great event in Baqueira-beret at the Copa de España last weekend where he qualified through to the quarterfinals. On the final day of the competition, the snowboarders received coaching from the Spanish Olympic snowboarders Lucas Eguibar and Regino Hernandez – overall a fantastic experience for Teiva!

Last weekend Carla achieved First Place in the second stage of the Andalucian Alpine Skiing Cup, thus maintaining her first position in the Andalucian ranking with two races to go.

SIS Ski Trip 2019

On Friday evening, 50 happy, healthy and exhausted students returned from 5 beautiful days in the Sierra Nevada. Many students having learned to ski or snowboard for the first time; all of them improving their skill level. All this whilst bonding together, making new friends and overcoming social and physical challenges.

As ever, huge thanks to Adventurebug and volunteering SIS staff, for providing yet another successful extraordinary experience for our students.

Here is a more detailed trip report by M2 student, Ines.

This year’s ski trip to Sierra Nevada was a blast! It was a great experience and I can assure you that all who attended it would love to commemorate all of the fun things that they did on this trip. We all participated in many enjoyable activities including ski biking, ice skating, going on a rollercoaster and many more.

When we got to Sierra Nevada the first day, we were all very tired as well as excited to hit the slopes and for some of us, try skiing for the first time. We left all our baggage at the hotel, grabbed our skiing gear and went to the top of the mountains in order to spend as much time as we could on the slopes. The weather conditions were great and the snow was amazing! Everyone eventually found their place in a group they felt comfortable skiing or snowboarding in.

With the help of some amazing ski instructors, school staff and students, we made the ski trip to Sierra Nevada a memorable one! Thank you everyone for the lovely experience; let’s hope next year’s will be even better!
