Tennis:
SotoTennis Academy (STA) was opened in June 2010 by Dan Kiernan, former British #1 Doubles Player. Over the last 11 years, STA has become one of Spain’s most renowned tennis academies, located in the exquisite Sotogrande.
STA's team of expert coaches deliver individualised programmes to players in a robust team environment. Each player, whilst receiving the many benefits of STA's strong team unity, has their own Lead Coach who manages the team around them, ensuring ultimate accountability for success on and off the court. The Lead Coach ensures that each individual has the private tuition, sparring, physical programme and sport science support they need in line with goals set. STA aims to provide an environment and opportunities that inspire and enable its players to maximise their potential through hard work and dedication.
We believe STA players deserve the best academic opportunities as this is crucial to long-term development. There does not need to be a compromise involved between full time tennis training and achieving an excellent education.
STA is proud to be one of the few leading tennis academies who can confidently offer world-class academics with Sotogrande International School alongside their Full Time Tennis Programmes. Many of STA’s student-athletes have graduated from their studies and gained scholarships with American and European Universities.
Each student-athlete that walks through STA's doors will hopefully be recognised as a hardworking, well-mannered individual who has done everything they can to achieve their goals.
Full Time Champions Programmes
Full Time STA Student-Athletes' programmes are designed and delivered as part of a total plan supporting the individual’s goals through:
> Performance planning
> Sport Science support
> Tournament travel
Full Time STA Programmes are therefore designed to include:
> Year-round Programme Management
> Tennis Squads
> Strength & Conditioning Squads
> Weekly Individual Lesson
> Matchplay
> Local Tournament Support
> International Tournament Support
> Sport Science Support
11 – 14 year olds: Future Champions Programme
The Future Champions Programme is for students age 11 to 14. Future Student-Athletes follow the normal school day structure with their sports training taking place at STA after school hours. Students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP).
14 – 16 year olds: Junior Champions Programme
Junior Student-Athletes, age 14 – 16, study the core subjects of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) until 14:00. Afternoons are spent training at STA. The MYP’s core subjects are: English, Maths, Science, Individuals & Societies (Humanities) and Language Acquisition.
By the end of this programme (age 16), Junior Champions attain all the qualifications they need to progress up the ladder to join the Elite Champions.
16 – 18 year olds: Elite Champions Programme
The Elite Champions Programme has been designed to optimise Student-Athletes' academic capabilities whilst they participate fully in their tennis programme.
Student-Athletes study 3 International A-Levels (Business Studies, Economics and Mathematics), as well as SAT Maths Preparation and an English Language Course, essential for acceptance into US Colleges after graduation. Small class sizes allow teachers to provide the Elite Student-Athletes with additional time, attention and assistance with their work. Elite Champions graduate with 3 qualifications:
> International A-Levels
> SAT Score
> High School Transcript
International A-Levels also keep the European university option open for those looking to study in Europe after graduation, whilst the SAT and High School Transcript enable access into the US university system.
