Physical Education

Curricular activities
Sotogrande International School possesses enviable sports and recreational facilities, including a safe modern Astroturf pitch, large indoor gymnasium, external hard court area and 25 metre swimming pool. The physical education and games programmes offered are extensive and continuously developing. Their objectives are to increase opportunities for variety, to develop students’ physical skills, promote and maintain physical health, give them a love of recreation and sports for their own sake and help them find activities in which they can excel and enjoy themselves. The curriculum also prepares students for inclusion in MYP Physical Education. Association football (soccer), basketball, cricket, softball, creative movement, dance, gymnastics, health related exercise, field hockey, badminton, swimming, touch rugby, track and field athletics, volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee, are all offered at some point in the S.I.S. curricular programme of Physical Education.
The school completes most activity modules with competitive inter-house tournaments and inter-school competitions. School teams practise before, during and after school hours, in most of the above activities. Parents are invited to attend galas, tournaments and competitions and to support the school teams. The school Swimming Gala and Track and Field Athletics Events are regular features of the inter-house sporting calendar.
If injured or ill, students are expected to offer a written request to be “Off Games”. This request should be signed by parent, guardian or school nurse and presented to the PE teacher before the lesson. Records of attendance, correct kit, personal best achievements and individual assessment in all activities are kept to monitor the progress of all students.
As well as providing grass roots sport with inter house events, SIS also aims to excel and targets the top of the sporting pyramid. We have numerous representatives in a variety of sports at school, regional, provincial, national and international level.
SIS participates in regular competitive inter school sports matches. Students are selected for teams on the basis of ability, commitment, discipline, effort and attendance for practices. Exceptionally talented sports students are recommended to attend Regional Costa Del Sol Trials, which gives them an opportunity to gain higher representative honours in specific sports. We also have strong community links and often work with elite specialist coaches and clubs.
