Diploma (DP)

The IB Diploma Program is academic and rigorous at all schools, but at SIS we have combined this with a great number of extra activities, which make the 2 years not only very busy but extremely fulfilling.
Students are arranged into small tutorial groups, with an overall Pastoral Tutor for the year group who liaises with you and your parents and makes sure you are keeping on top of the work.
There are six subject areas and you have to pick one from each group, covering languages, humanities, sciences, math and the arts. In addition to this there is an interesting course called Theory of Knowledge which stimulates critical reflection on the concept of knowledge and ways of knowing. It will help you learn to think, reason and argue critically, and examine the nature of value judgements.
Creativity, Action and Service is a counterbalance to the academic program. At SIS there are several group trips based around the CAS requirement. Each Spring the group travels to southern Morocco to spend time with a Berber community in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. There you will have a chance to learn about a different culture in a new country and extend the hand of friendship. There is a myriad of theatrical and musical productions at SIS, all of which you can be involved in: Diploma students regularly organize fund-raising events in school, and sports, camping & hiking also feature in the Diploma student´s year.
The extended essay is a piece of original research of 4000 words. Students will receive guidance and supervision from a specially appointed subject teacher. This is not only a great preparation for higher education, but enables you to show university admissions tutors that you have an interest beyond the confines of the syllabus and that you are able to write well.
