Boarding Life

At Sotogrande the boarding house is located on-campus, and houses some 35 young people from all over the world. Here our first concern is to provide you with a safe, structured, caring and happy community. You will be looked after by a residential couple: Peter Lawrence is an English teacher and has been at SIS for 10 years: he has taken many groups of students on trips to Morocco and beyond. His wife Jane Cameron is a part-time Primary teacher, and devotes the rst of her time to the boarders.
The general well-being of the boarding house depends on the happiness of individual boarders and on the caring relationships that are built between the boarders themselves and the house parents. As the residence is relatively small this enables staff to get to know and understand the students as individuals.
The school offers both weekly and full boarding services which cover all of the things that parents would normally provide if they were available, including medical care with a nurse on site during school hours and access to a flying doctor service after school hours, help with homework activities, trips and activities and, of course, care and support in a family environment.
SIS works hard to make the transition from home to the school as smooth as possible, especially if a child is coming from overseas. The accommodation in boarding is comfortable and attractive and each student has their own room or shares with another student of the same age. Each boarder has their own private space for their belongings, a built in wardrobe and desk and a single bed. Students often decorate their rooms with posters and bring their own items such as music systems and ipods.
There is a communal area which consists of a large living room complete with sofas, a large plasma screen, video and dvd players; a small kitchen area where boarders can make their own drinks and toast etc and a study area complete with two internet ready computers. There is a further games room with table football and a pool table and sofas. Students are encouraged to do their own laundry and there are washing and ironing facilities for their use. As with the rest of the campus the boarding house has high-speed internet access and a wireless LAN.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided by the school catering company and the cook makes a special effort to prepare interesting food for the boarders. In addition boarders sometimes go to local restaurants or cook for themselves. Tea is provided in the boarding house each day after school for students to help themselves (sandwiches, fruit, juice etc).
